How to Care for Beeswax Candles (And Why They're Worth It)

Why Beeswax Candles Are Special

Beeswax candles are one of nature's gifts. Unlike paraffin candles made from petroleum, beeswax is a natural byproduct of honey production. It burns cleaner, longer, and emits a warm, golden light that no synthetic candle can replicate. Many people also love that beeswax candles release negative ions as they burn — helping to neutralize dust, pollen, and other airborne particles in your home.

At Birch & Boreal, our beeswax candles are handcrafted in small batches, which means every one is a little different — and a little special.

First Burn: The Most Important One

The first time you light a beeswax candle sets the tone for every burn after. Always allow your candle to burn long enough for the melt pool to reach the edges of the container or pillar — this prevents "tunnelling," where the candle burns straight down the middle and wastes wax on the sides. For most candles, this means burning for at least 2–3 hours on the first use.

Trim Your Wick Every Time

Before each burn, trim your wick to about 6mm (¼ inch). A long wick causes the flame to flicker, smoke, and burn unevenly. A simple wick trimmer works best, but small scissors do the job too. This one habit dramatically extends the life of your candle.

Keep It Away from Drafts

Beeswax candles burn best in still air. Drafts from open windows, fans, or air vents cause uneven burning and can leave black soot marks on the container. Find a calm, sheltered spot on your table or shelf for the best experience.

Store Them Properly

Beeswax is sensitive to temperature and light. Store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. If you notice a white, powdery film on the surface of your candle — don't worry! This is called "bloom" and is a completely natural characteristic of pure beeswax. It doesn't affect the burn quality at all, and many people consider it a sign of authenticity. You can gently buff it away with a soft cloth if you prefer.

Extinguish Safely

Use a candle snuffer rather than blowing out your beeswax candle. Blowing can send hot wax spattering and may cause the wick to drift off-centre. A snuffer keeps everything tidy and preserves the wick position for the next burn.
